The Art of Tolerance: United Buddy Bears

Exhibition February 2005 - Sydney

“We have to get to know each other better!” This is the idea embodied by 123 Buddy Bears holding hands to form a big circle 30 metres in diameter. Each bear has an individual artistic design and together they represent 123 member states of the United Nations. They have already been celebrated in Berlin, Kitzbühel, Hong Kong and Tokyo as a symbol for “international understanding and tolerance.”

In 2002, the idea for this exhibition was realized by the creators of the Buddy Bears Eva and Klaus Herlitz in Berlin in cooperation with 125 artists from all over the world. The peaceful string of colourful bears creates a symbolism which promotes love, peace, friendship, tolerance and international understanding. After a hugely successful exhibition at the Brandenburg gate in Berlin, the Bears have gone on world tour and many have been sold by auction for the benefit of UNICEF.

In February 2006 the colourful band of bears will visit us here in Sydney. Watch this space for more information on the bears and associated events!

In collaboration with the German Embassy Canberra and the German Consulate-General Sydney.
