buddy mania sweeps german capital

Since June 2001 Berlin's heraldic beast, the bear, has been causing quite a stir in the German capital: with 350 lifesize fibre glass bears dotted around the city, it has been turned into a huge open-air gallery. The so-called Buddy Bears were bought by 130 sponsors for 1,500 euros each, and decorated or dressed up by leading artists, schoolchildren, art students and celebrities.

Two dozen of the crawling, dancing and acrobatic bears can be admired in the "Bear Park" in and around the DIFA CityQuartier development at Neues Kranzler Eck on the main Ku'damm shopping boulevard The development's advertising team commissioned the city's Art Academy and a number of Russian artists to decorate ten of the bears. A further 14 Buddies were painted and dressed by artists for sponsors such as the German basketball champions Alba Berlin or premier league football club Hertha BSC Berlin. From Christmas 2001 the Buddy Bears will be auctioned off, with the proceeds going towards facilities for children As Dr Bernd Andrich, manager of City Quartier development Neues Kranzler Eck comments "Because of their number and eyecatching designs, the bears will be an impactful addition to the development".
