The Bears are Coming!

United Buddy Bears to be shown at Sydney’s Circular Quay in March/April 2006 Berlin, Tokyo, Seoul… being on world tour, the colourful group of 124 life-size Buddy Bear sculptures don’t get much time to hibernate. They are now preparing their arrival in Sydney and will soon be on public display here at Circular Quay’s Overseas Passenger Terminal.

Originally from Berlin the bears represent the member states of the United Nations and ‘bear’ the joyful message of international harmony and tolerance. Painted in unique ways by internationally renowned artists they represent their countries of origin, standing hand in hand as a symbol of peace and international cooperation. The bear-initiative by Dr Klaus and Eva Herlitz from Berlin has raised in excess of a million Euros (about 1.5 million AUD) in aid of UNICEF and local child relief organisations so far! The aim of local organisers Hamburg-Süd, Schenker Australia, the Goethe-Institut Sydney and UNICEF Australia is to continue this trend when the bears are shown to the Australian public.

“We are thrilled to be able to include Sydney on this tour of world cities,” said Eva Herlitz, as Sydney ports confirmed the exhibition site on December 10. “Sydney with its welcoming spirit is bound to be a highlight of the tour.”

In each of the cities visited so far the Buddy Bears have drawn huge crowds. High-profile patrons and believers in the project such as Jackie Chan and the late Sir Peter Ustinov have added to the excitement of the project and associated events.
