Interpretation

The name Liberia expresses freedom. Former slaves who had returned from the USA founded the state in West Africa in 1847. It was never colonised. Liberia’s landscape shows very wide coastal plains and mountainous areas covered with tropical rainforest. The country is among the regions with the greatest biodiversity on the African continent. Early on, research expeditions discovered rare animal species. Since the turn of the millennium, national parks and nature reserves have been first successes in nature preservation and environmental protection. Chimpanzees, forest elephants, leopards and hippopotamuses are the most well-known large mammals in Liberia.
