Help for Guatemala

In November, two tropical storms devastated large parts of Central America in quick succession. In rural Guatemala, this resulted in numerous houses being buried by landslides and thousands of people fleeing through partly flooded areas.

The German government has donated 575,000 euros in financial aid to the World Food Programme (WFP) for the country of Guatemala. The German Ambassador to Guatemala, Harald Klein, presented the UN aid organization with a corresponding donation check at the end of last year.

As a little gesture, the German Embassy received several jute bags with a Buddy Bear printed on them and the inscription "Germany and WFP - For a Guatemala with Zero Hunger" ("Alemania y WFP - Por una Guatemala #HambreCero").

The Buddy Bears, known worldwide as a symbol of Berlin and a cosmopolitan Germany, were in Guatemala as recently as 2019 with the United Buddy Bears' international exhibition "The Art of Tolerance." The project, which aims to bring people together, inspired more than one million visitors in Guatemala City as well as the World Heritage City of Antigua.
