Commitment honored: “Blue Bear” 2025

The Berlin European Prize “Blue Bear” 2025 was awarded on December 5, International Volunteer Day, in the ballroom of the Red City Hall. The award was presented by Florian Hauer, State Secretary for Federal and European Affairs and International Affairs in the Senate Chancellery, and Gosia Binczyk, Deputy Head of the European Commission in Berlin.

The award is aimed at Berlin-based initiatives and individuals who are particularly committed to promoting a communal, diverse Europe.

One of the award-winning projects is #BIKEYGEES e.V.: a predominantly volunteer team that has taught more than 2,000 women with migration experience how to ride a bike since 2015. In addition to practical training sessions, the program also includes traffic safety education, bicycle repairs, and group excursions. The initiative boosts self-confidence, creates spaces for people to meet, and shows how integration can succeed in everyday life.

Luigino Giustozzi, who has been involved with the German-Italian European School Finow Elementary School for three decades, was also honored. Whether it's parties, leisure activities, or setting up a multilingual school library, his commitment creates connections between cultures and promotes European openness among even the youngest Berliners.

The award figures—individually designed 30 cm tall Buddy Bears—have been donated by Buddy Bear Berlin since 2015. Managing Director Mr. Herlitz presents the bears as a symbol of diversity, peace, and cohesion. They accompany the award ceremony and honor people who bring Europe to life in everyday life.
