What to expect from the ‘United Buddy Bears’ exhibition at Gardens By The Bay

Look up from the Supertree Grove Lawn and you might see a colourful ring of giants. They are not an art prank or an alien landing but 150 fibreglass bears, each two metres tall, gathered for the ‘United Buddy Bears’ exhibition. These bears stand almost hand in hand to spread a message of world peace, dialogue, and kindness across borders — a total of 145 countries, each painted by an artist from that nation. Singapore’s bear is red and white, mirroring the national flag, and is decorated with orchids, henna tattoos, and lotuses to reflect its multicultural identity — the other five stand for values. The ‘Golden Rule’ and the ‘Global Ethic’ are gold-dipped companions that never part, while the rest symbolise ‘Human Rights’, ‘Respect for All Life’, and ‘Einstein’, a tribute to Albert Einstein.
